What the Surface Holds
2026 • Selected Paintings
What the Surface Holds explores what cannot always be seen or named—the traces left by experience, the invisible connections between ourselves and others, and the ways identity is continually shaped through attachment, separation, and change.
Working intuitively through translucent washes, atmospheric veils, accumulated marks, and passages of metallic gold, I create surfaces in which forms emerge, dissolve, overlap, and separate. Layers are built, obscured, interrupted, and reworked, preserving evidence of what came before. Gold appears along fissures, edges, and moments of disruption—not to conceal what has been altered, but to acknowledge transformation, resilience, and the possibility of beauty within imperfection.
Informed by my ongoing Mothering-ArtAcademic inquiry, these paintings consider mothering as an embodied and spiritual experience of holding and releasing, connection and separation, vulnerability and strength. The rhythms and energies of the natural world—water, earth, light, erosion, and renewal—inform a visual language in which the body becomes landscape and memory becomes material.
Through the interplay of color, gesture, and accumulated layers, What the Surface Holds asks what we carry, what we conceal, what remains between ourselves and those we have held, and how these experiences continually shape who we are becoming.

Explorations in Color and Form
My earlier paintings explore color as an expressive language through saturated pigments, intuitive gestures, layered compositions, and abstract forms. These works reflect an evolving visual inquiry into emotion, identity, movement, and the transformative possibilities of color.
